Plates-Concentrated load edge sliding and distance to edge EC-2 (1992-2)

The annex J of Eurocode EN 1992-2, sections (102) and (104), provides the reinforcement to prevent edge sliding under concentrated loads and the requirements to be respected regarding distances from the concentrated load and the nearest edge.

It is especially important in bridge supports, in short corbels since they bear concentrated loads near edges. When sizing the reinforcement of short corbels, it is important to consider these quantities of reinforcement to prevent edge sliding.

The Annex J of EN 1992-2 reads as follows:
- (102) The distance from the edge of the loaded area to the free edge of the concrete section should not be less than 1/6 of the corresponding dimension of the loaded area measured in the same direction. In no cases should the distance to the free edge be taken as less than 50 mm.
- (104) In order to avoid edge sliding, uniformly distributed reinforcement parallel to the loaded face shouldbe provided to the point at which local compressive stresses are dispersed. This point is determined as follows: A line inclined at an angle θ (30°) to the direction of load application is drawn from the edge of the section to intersect with the opposite edge of the loaded surface, as shown in Figure J.107. The reinforcement provided to avoid edge sliding shall be adequately anchored.
